The Wreck of the Brig Columbus

on Lother Rock

Here is the story of the foundering of the Brig Columbus in January 1862, within sight of St Mary's Kirk. The body of one of the crew is buried in the churchyard.

A poem (or rather – ditty) was written at the time by, it is believed, a young Caithness man who was working as a cowherd with Mr Allan at Brough at the time. He would have witnessed the incident, and perhaps even been part of the rescue team. It was reprinted in The Orcadian newspaper on 4th November 1976
